Learn how to install, update a license, and enable toolboxes/extensions.

How to install ArcGIS

Step One:

Please submit an iTicket requesting ArcGIS installer.

Step Two:

Once you have received the installer, download it and click run to begin installation.

  1. Select destination folder - either default or browse & choose a different folder
  2. This will initiate the extraction of the installation files.
  3. Once the files are extracted check the box at the bottom of the screen to open installation files.
  4. Click Close.
  5. The installation will commence.
  6. Accept the master agreement > Next.
  7. Choose your installation method preference
    1. Complete - all apps and features installed (best for basic/intermediate arcgis users)
    2. Custom - you hand pick which apps and features you'd like to install (best for advanced users)
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select designation folder - either default or browse & choose a different folder
    1. This will occur twice in a row: once for installation files, the other for python files
  10. Check or uncheck the "participate in Esri User Experience Improvement program" based on your preference.
  11. Click Install.
  12. Allow the installation process to complete and click Finish.
  13. The ArcGIS Administrator Wizard will likely automatically open.
    1. Select Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use.
    2. Under License Manager, select that you'll define one later with ArcGIS Administrator. 
  14. Finish.
  15. Now ArcGIS should be installed.
  16. Follow the instructions for concurrent/single-use licensing here.
    1. Note: The ArcGIS Administrator may open automatically after installation complete. Keep it open and follow instructions for licensing.

How to Update an ArcGIS 10.x Concurrent Use License

Update Concurrent Use License:

  1. Click on the Windows Start button, and type ArcGIS Administrator into the search bar.
  2. Open the Administrator, and click on the Desktop folder icon in the lefthand panel.
  3. Select Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use.
  4. Under field "License Manager" select the "Change..." button.
    1. Input arcserver.mlml.calstate.edu
      Note: You must be onsite at MLML to activate the Concurrent Use License.
    2. Click OK.
  5. Click Apply, then click OK.


Please Note:

You must be onsite to use the license server.
This means that the ArcGIS software itself will ONLY work if you are currently connected to an MLML network.
Repeated: If you are using a concurrent license, the ArcGIS software will not work offsite!

To communicate with the license server from offsite of MLML's network, you will need to connect remotely via the MLML VPN. Or you will have to acquire a single-use license, which must be specially requested via an iTicket.

How to Register/Update an ArcGIS 10.x Single Use License

Update Single Use License:

  1. Submit an IT Help Desk ticket to request a Single Use license.
  2. Once you receive your license number, go to the ArcGIS Desktop Student Trial page.
  3. Create an ESRI Account or Sign in in using your ESRI Account.
  4. On the Activate your ArcGIS for Desktop 10 Authorization Number page, enter the EVAXXXXXXXXX number and click Activate ArcGIS.
    1. If ArcGIS is already installed on your computer, do not select a version to download.
  5. Right-click ArcGIS Administrator (Start > All Programs > ArcGIS > ArcGIS Administrator) and select Run as Administrator.
  6. Choose Desktop > Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use and click Authorize Now.
  7. Select "I have installed my software and need to authorize it.", click next.
  8. Select "Authorize with Esri now using the Internet.", click next.
  9. Enter all of your personal information and the Authorization number.
  10. Click Finish.

Enable toolboxes/extensions in ArcGIS

If you're getting an error that looks something like this:

...then you need to enable the extension that tool belongs to.
Enable extensions in ArcGIS
  1. Navigate to Customize > Extensions... in ArcMap.

     

  2. Enable the extension(s) you need and click Close. That's it!

ArcGIS Online

ArcGIS Online offers a complete, cloud-based geographic information system of the world. CSUMB and SJSU students, staff, and faculty can access ArcGIS Online through their respective institutions.


CSUMB

  1. Login to CSUMB's Education and Research organization account
    1. Use your OtterID and password
  2. You can now navigate ArcGIS Online using the menu at the top of the screen
    1. Gallery - View all projects within CSU Monterey Bay's Education and Research group.
    2. Map - Create 2D and basemaps to represent spatial data.
    3. Scene - Create maps with 3D data.
    4. Groups - Access groups of users that you are apart of as well as view CSUMB's groups and featured ArcGIS Online groups.
    5. Content - Access ArcGIS content that you have created or view other's content from your groups, organizations, or that you have favorited.
    6. Organization - View information about CSUMB's ArcGIS Online group.

SJSU

  1.  Request access to ArcGIS Online using this form.
    1. It may take a few days to process the request
  2. You will receive an email from notifications@arcgis.com with instructions on how to set up your ArcGIS Online account

  3. Click the link in the email and create a password

  4. You can now navigate ArcGIS Online using the menu at the top of the screen
    1. Gallery - View all projects within SJSU's Education and Research group.
    2. Map - Create 2D and basemaps to represent spatial data.
    3. Scene - Create maps with 3D data.
    4. Groups - Access groups of users that you are apart of as well as view SJSU's groups and featured ArcGIS Online groups.
    5. Content - Access ArcGIS content that you have created or view other's content from your groups, organizations, or that you have favorited.
    6. Organization - View information about SJSU's ArcGIS Online group.

Gaining Access to ArcGIS Pro (SJSU)

To gain access to ArcGIS Pro, please follow the steps outlined below: 

 

Activating your ArcGIS Account
  1. Click this link to be taken to the ArcGIS portal.
  2. Click Sign in.
  3. Click SJSU Okta.
  4. Sign in with your SJSU TowerID number and password.
Downloading ArcGIS Pro 
  1. At the top of the page, click your user name and click My settings.
  2. On the My Settings page, click the Licenses tab.
  3. Your user type, role, and assigned licenses are listed
  4. Next to ArcGIS Pro, click Download.
  5. Install the software following these directions, but rather than using the concurrent use license, launch ArcGIS Pro and click "Sign in with your organization's ArcGIS URL".
  6. Enter sjsugis into the URL box and click Continue.
  7. Click SJSU Okta.
  8. Sign in with your SJSU TowerID number and password again.
  9. ArcGIS Pro will be activated and ready to use.
